Brownie Peanut Butter Cup Surprises
Friendships aren’t always instantaneous. I met my best friend from high school, Meaghan, when we were Sophomores. We were all cramming into a Senior boy’s car who took us to lunch. She called shotgun first so she could sit next to the cute Senior boy and flirted with him the whole time. Because we all know we were in love with the boy not the rides he gave us to lunch…right? 🙂
My friends and I thought she was overly aggressive in how she called shotgun every time we went to lunch. Now, I would have complimented her on her antics. And that’s how Meaghan earned the nickname “MegaBeast”.

But as I got to know her, I loved her. She was the wild and crazy person I wanted to be and I toned her down and reeled her in when it was time to be serious.
Best friends know everything about each other: Whether they are “Team Edward” or “Team Jacob”, their favorite bagel at Starbucks, guys they’re crushing on…you know the basics.
For Christmas that year I made all of my friends plates of goodies and I dropped one off at Meaghan’s house.
I guess there’s one more thing you should know about your best friend…
That she’s allergic to NUTS.
Uh. Oops. I had made brownies with a mini-Reese’s Peanut Butter cup shoved in the middle. They were called Brownie Surprises. Or in her case Brownie-Surprise-now-your-throat-is-swelling-shut-and-you-have-hives-all-over-your-body.
Did I mention best friends should also be quick to forgive each other?
Last time I was in town visiting I suggested we go to Chick-Fil-A for lunch…which turns out uses none other than peanut oil to cook everything.
Awesome friend I am.
Brownie Peanut Butter Cup Surprises
A Reese's tucked inside a brownie cup is a sweet surprise.
Ingredients
- 1 box of brownie mix, and eggs and oil that box calls for
- 1 package of mini Reese's peanut butter cups, unwrapped
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line mini-muffin tin with paper liners. Mix brownies according to package directions. Fill each mini-muffin cup about 3/4 of the way full. Press one Reese's peanut butter cup into each brownie. Bake for 8-10 minutes.
- *Can be made with regular sized muffin tins too. Just adjust the cooking time to around 15-18 minutes.
- Great with peanut butter cookie dough too.
I can’t believe how easy these are to make!! I featured them in my muffin tin blog post: http://www.recipechatter.com/anything-but-muffins-muffin-tin-recipes/
I know it’s been a long time since you posted this, but I have a question if you see this. I tried making these for my son and 2 step-sons. I must have done something wrong because the brownie didn’t bake all the way. They were extremely soft even after cooling, and after taking removing the paper liner the bottom was basically uncooked batter. I think I used a Pillsbury brownie mix and a mini muffin pan. Any suggestions? I would love to try them again.
@Karri,
Ooh. That’s really strange. With a mini muffin pan they should not take that long to bake but every oven is different. Sounds like they needed a couple more minutes in the oven. Sorry!
I read an article recently on the health benefits of peanut butter. It is not only an excellent source of protein, but also an antioxident for prevention of breast cancer! Info that I feel obligated to pass on. All of us chocolate lovers already know how good chocolate is for us. My name is Edy and I am a Reeces Peanut Butter cup addict. lol 🙂
How many minis does this make?
It makes about 24 minis!
Well, if you wanted to have another “surprise” you could exchange the peanut butter cup for one of Hershey’s flavor kisses (caramel would be DIVINE. Just a thought.
😀
HA HA! Christy! I forgive you and did you have to tell everyone I was a Megabeast! I couldn’t get enough of these brownies. I was really suprised when i bit into the middle. Joke’s on me.(I have PTS from your PB suprise brownies;). Miss you girly and keep baking!
This post title made me laugh, because, you see, I’m allergic to chocolate, and my best friend has done the same thing! (She loves white chocolate, which may or may not have cocoa in it!) And my husband attempted this one time too, by making french toast with a lot of vanilla. That was the day we learned imitation vanilla is colored with cocoa! Funny thing, the best friend knew that!
My mom makes these brownies and loves them! She often puts a snickers bar in them, but loves Reese’s so I’ll have to see if she’s tried that! 🙂
Hilarious story! Well the part about meeting your friend, not the almost dying part. I’m glad she’s ok. Those brownies look amazing!
Oh wow, I’ve made those with peanut butter cookie on the outside but brownies may be even better. Yum.
These look so yummy!! My hubby would die for them 🙂
I was searching through recipes and can upon this. I love the story! I’m also a peanut lover so I had to try them. The first batch is out and cooling. I can hardly wait!
We are NOT allergic to nuts and my kids would love these! Thanks for sharing. Love the story about MegaBeast, I’m sure you didn’t try to kill her on purpose…twice…;)
It is a good thing these are not near me right now & I am so happy myself & my kids are not allergic to nuts. Total Yum 🙂

Great idea! I have a silicone tray with little christmas tree molds and used that – came out beautifully and such a great gift for the holidays…thank you!- Kathleen from MA

Oh no! I hope she’s okay… The treats look delicious!
Oh man these look delicious! Love the surprise in these brownies!
They sell bagels at Starbucks? I did not know this!
I love simple recipes like this one that are so tasty they’re sinful! Great idea!
A mouthwatering brownie!
What a simple, delicious idea! I’m sure all non-peanut allergy friends would love these.
Those look awesome! I save recipes like these, then when my nut allergic daughter goes to grandma’s for the weekend, I gorge. 🙂 PB is my comfort food!
Also, the peanut oil not triggering a reaction is not entirely true, and having partial information like that is dangerous. Peanut oil not likely to cause a reaction, but it can, and it has to do with the way the oil was processed (cold-pressed or expressed). Most restaurants won’t going to know how peanut oil was processed at the time of manufacture, so people with nut allergies should avoid it.
As Brandy sang. Way way way back in the day – almost doesn’t count.
Man do these look awesome.
Well, on the plus side peanut oil doesn’t cause allerigic reactions for peanut allergies. Something about the protien of the peanut not being in the oil or something. Well anyways these look really yummy!
I loved reading your story 😀 And the Brownie Surprises look soooooo amazing♥
xoxo

I feel for you. I have also tried to kill my highschool best friend with shellfish. I made a hot crab dip for a party and couldn’t wait for her to try it. Thankfully she asked what was in it before she tried it. She forgave me, but still checks the ingredients when I cook.
Quite a story, but what an awesome looking treat!
Quite a story, but what an awesome looking treat!
I am with Kristy…I would DIE w/out peanut butter. I didn’t like pb until i was like 19…and believe me I’ve made up for it since then. I have seen these made with pb cookies but not brownies…I LOVE it. They look SO good! 🙂

That is too funny. I would die if I were allergic to nuts. I couldn’t live without peanut butter. These look great!
Yesterday, I tried doing this same thing with cookie dough pieces in the middle…failed. Not sure what went wrong.
